Speaker Development Series: The Ethics of Humor

This month's session will delve into a crucial and often complex topic: "The Ethics of Humor." Humor can be a powerful tool in presentations, helping to engage the audience, break the ice, and make messages more memorable. However, using humor effectively requires a delicate balance, as it can easily backfire if not handled with care. Our discussion will explore the boundaries of humor: when it is appropriate to use humor in your speeches and when it might be best to avoid it. We'll also examine the ways to address sensitive subjects in a manner that is respectful, non-offensive, and still impactful. Understanding these nuances is essential for any speaker who wants to use humor responsibly and effectively.

To provide a well-rounded perspective on this topic, we have assembled a panel of speakers, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise. Our panelists include:

  • Brooklin Green – a Humorist, Speaker, and Communications Expert known for her unique approach to blending humor with valuable communication techniques.
  • Lori Shandle-Fox – a Humorist and Coping Guru, will share her insights on using humor as a coping mechanism and how to integrate it into presentations in a way that resonates with diverse audiences.
  • Jennifer Meyer – a dedicated mindset coach, training professional, and advocate for personal transformation with a genuine passion to empower others.
  • Deanna Jones – A seasoned technology professional with 30 years of experience, Deanna embraced her authentic self through transition while working at Cisco in 2019. Inspired by her journey, she now serves as President of the Harmony LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce and is actively involved in the LGBTQ+ community.
Our panel moderator:
  • Tara Brown, a seasoned Humorist and Speaker who is adept at guiding conversations around humor and its role in public speaking. Tara's expertise will ensure a dynamic and engaging discussion, providing attendees with actionable insights they can apply in their own speaking engagements.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out in the speaking industry, this session is a must-attend event that promises to deepen your understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding humor. Learn how to enhance your presentations with humor that connects, engages, and respects your audience. Don't miss this opportunity to refine your skills and elevate your speaking business with the guidance of industry experts!

This event will take place on Wednesday, September 18th from 12-1PM ET, and is an NSA Carolinas members only event.
